Based on Nikole Hannah-Jones essays for The New York Times, The 1619 Project challenges its audience to rethink the consequences of slavery in American history. The documentary series is divided into six parts — “Democracy,” “Race,” “Music,” “Capitalism,” “Fear” and “Justice” — each highlighting how Black Americans contributed to American culture in the face of adversity and racism.

The 1619 Project won a Primetime Emmy Award for the “Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series” category and was nominated for the “Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program” and “Outstanding Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program” categories.
